Driving on the wrong side of the road outside Stone Town 10/22/18

After breakfast today we headed into town to get the rental and explore. We were lucky enough to hitch a ride with the guy at the hotel (his uncle owns the place). I was super excited because it was going to be a bitch to get to town on the local transportation and take hours. The guy dropped us off in Stone Town, just where we wanted to go. The town is along the ocean and is just outside Zanzibar City. It reminds us of Morocco, small narrow alleys, fancy doors, lots of shopping and restaurants, calls to prayer every 3 hours. Andy found some cool old metal signs to buy. We snacked on a rooftop bar. Ate some meat on a stick (mishkaki), one time we thought we were eating beef and it was fucking liver- eeewwww. Pet cats (so far we haven't seen dogs on this island). Ate at Lukmann, a local place with really good local food, and really cheap. The town is lovely but I'm glad we aren't staying here, it's too loud and not much else to do.

I made a car rental appointment online and the guy was nice enough to drop it off for us downtown. Now we wouldn't have to deal w/ paying someone to take us one way, and we had freedom. Andy's the driver of course, he was itching to drive here. They drive on the left in Tanzania. It was a bit stressful. The city is crazy w/ people crossing the street everywhere, people coming from right and left. The blinker is on the opposite side too so he kept turning on the windshield wipers. He also said that it's not as simple as sitting on the other side of the car, the depth perception of what is on the left if all off (he got really close to cars several times). Driving for the 30+ min through the city was fucking nuts. We were both stressed. But now we have a car and can come and go as we like. Andy got even more sunburnt through his cheap $3 shirt from Kigali. Tomorrow is diving!
