The Cathedral, Shira 2 Camp, Day 3; 9/27/18
The Germans were restless last night. At about 1 AM in the morning, they woke up and started having a full-blast conversation about complaints about food and comfort items. Andy eventually got tired of being kept awake and ask them politely to shut the hell up. In German. We woke again at about 5 o’clock with the German climbers but we were well rested at that point. It was not raining when we woke up and we had a quick delicious breakfast of millet porridge, eggs, and hotdogs (sausage), no coffee.
After breakfast, we were showing Ben the dehydrated toilet paper and he thought it would be funny if you had one of the porters come in and eat it like a candy. Not funny to the porter, Jaffa. I told him to spit it out right before he swallowed it. Oh god, I couldn't imagine what would happen to him if he did.
Immediately after breakfast we got up on the trail and started our way towards the cathedral. The Cathedral Peaks consisted of several 13,000 foot towers and we climbed one of them to look down on the vast valley below us. After we finished the climb of the cathedrals, we started to see a lot of fog come in and visibility went to almost 0 and it started to rain again. The mountain itself consisted of red and yellow Lycans with moss on trees and anything that was able to hold the moss beautiful‘s pale green-yellow is just beautiful. Once the cathedrals were behind us we decided to go towards camp which was a little bit of a downhill and then consistent uphill.
As we were walking down to the first ranger station we saw an ambulance coming up the hill our first encounter with altitude sickness on the hill three climbers had to come off the hill. We trench that the last part of the hill or camp she was to is it almost 13,000 feet and it started raining very hard. Again we were the first climbers to arrive Andy felt a little bad for all of the people behind us that had to endure the heavy rains. We sat in the mess tents and dried off of it and warmed up with some hot tea and cocoa. Overall we feel strong although I had beginnings of a headache that we’re dealing with water and some Tylenol we are hoping it doesn’t grow into something bigger and we are considering altitude sickness pills in a couple days. With the fast hike today we had a hot lunch for the first time which was fantastic. It consisted of a creamy avocado salad with green beans and red peppers and peas as well as fruit hot french fries and meatballs. After lunch we talked for a little bit and then decided to take a little one hour nap and wait out the rain. We played checkers in the mess tent for a while, kind of making up some rolls as we went. The board was a piece of recycled advertisement sign and the checkers were red and yellow bottle caps.

Around 430 finally stopped raining so we put on our puffy jackets and sat outside to watch people rolling into camp in the evening. We were standing by the camp sign where a lot of people go first once they arrive. We came across a group of probably Americans who had just come from all the way from the big tree this year at two. They did not look happy, it is a pretty big hike especially for your first day. We also met a gentleman from Portland names Long. We chatted with him a while about hiking and his adventures. We looked at the register to see if we could find John who we met on the first day, he wasn’t on the register yet. People were strolling in pretty late, it was going to be a long day for them. We had dinner at six like always. We had pasta with meat veggies. Right after dinner. We were trying to stay up and talk like always but it felt good to sleep so we crash around 8 o’clock in preparation for the big hike tomorrow.
