The First Cold Shower I've Taken Intentionally
Woke up at 630 after 5 hours of sleep on half a Xanax (it's not easy waking up) and we're back at the airport. Andy pissed off the shuttle lady because she told him his muffin would make a mess and it did- all over the floor he left crumbs. Pissing off the locals, a good way to start. I don't know why George W Bush airport wasn't subjecting everyone to the horrible country music this morning- maybe it's too early to lose your woman and your dog? A short painless two hour flight to Belize- and our luggage made it too! We shared a cab w/ another couple, I think we acutally made them nervous when we asked where they were going and if they wanted to share a cab. The cabbie took us to the Belize City bus station $20 later. They don't joke around w/ screwing tourists here.
With some time to spare we got some beers and pigs in a blanket and hotdogs w/ mustard, ketchup, and of course mayo- yes, we are finally on vacation! It's hot here but not unbearable, or maybe the fact I'm on vaca I handle it much better. Paid $54 for our bus ride to Flores Guatemala where we have a reservation for the night. Jumped on the bus with three young backpackers and a local. The bus looks nothing like the pictures. :)
The ride wasn't too bad. We could lay down and nap since it wasn't packed. About 4 hours in we made it to the border. A girl from NY was in front of us and we were trying to figure out if we were getting screwed because they told us to pay $5 Belize dollars to enter. She argued w/ them for a bit but then gave in. When we got back to the bus she asked the couple (the girl spoked Spanish) if they paid. They of course didn't so the three of us charged back to the border patrol and demanded our money back. Yeah it was only $2.5 USD but it was the principal.
We got to Flores around 6. It's a cute little island w/ lots of tourists- all menus are in Spanish and English. We quickly dropped our luggage off and headed out to see the island. It had cooled down a bit but we were still sweating. The fluffy clouds had heat lighting which was pretty cool to watch as we ate dinner. Dinner consisted of dos cervesas of Gallo and burrittos which cost us $25. Not the cheap Guatemalan food I was hoping for. Of course this is a tourist town and we ate with of view. Whatever, it's still cheaper than CA.
Headed back to the hotel to take a cold shower. We've been travelling for 24 hours, sweating a ton, and we have to wake up at 4am to try to catch the sun rise at Tikal. Good thing we have separate beds because we decided to forgo the $7 air conditioning fee. No idea why this place is supposed to be so dangerous. Tomorrow we'll find somewhere w/ less white people.
