A fabulous end to the India trip
we had an amazing time today that we didn't expect. we didn't get our sarees until 5 and we had to be at the hotel at 7- it takes an hour to get there. as soon as we got the sarees from the talior we took them straight to the place we bought the fabric- Mysore Silk. if they had a yelp page i would yelp the hell out of them. they are the most amazing people!!
i walked into the store asking the woman for help. she agreed to show us how to do it- i volunteered to be the guinea pig. once the gals saw how difficult it was to wrap a saree, we all shook our heads knowing we would never be able to do it. at that point, the guy who owns the store, Deepak, took all the gals he had working in the shop (all 8 of them) and pointed them to our attention. we had to get the pennicoats that go under the sarees. i didn't want one because i thought i could use my shorts- until the dude asked how i was going to use the loo. i never though of that one. at that point the women have already wrapped my in my saree and i was determined to not use the bathroom all night long if that's what i took so they didn't have to do that again. in the end they ended up getting me one. did i mention that us 4 American ladies totally took over the store and we had 8 ladies helping us? they were the most wonderful people i've met. they started to do my hair. then when they did lynnettes she didn't have enough bobby pins so a girl took one out of her hair and gave it to lynnette. as soon as that happened she started to cry. oh yeah, she started to pour tears. it was the most emotiontial time on this trip. that's right. no child or family in poverty made us cry like we did today. not sure if that's ok, but we were all crying they were so giving and amazing.
when the other gals were getting fitted i asked Deepak what we could do to show our appreciation, money or gifts? he said nothing and almost started to cry- then i wanted to cry. i told him we have to so we're going back tomorrow with gifts for everyone. at one point the gals started doing our hair (girlfriend needs to upload to youtube), and as they were doing lynnett's hair a girl actually took her bobby pin out of her own hair to give it to lynnette. once all of us were fitted we took pic with all the gals. some of the girls were crying. not sure where all the love came from but it was there.
to totally end the whole event, Deepak gave us presents before we left! that's right, he gave all of us individual gifts! he teared up as he gave us them and so did we. who give people a gift? it was the most amazing thing i've experienced. we showed up for dinner looking fab and it was an awesome experince. it was hots as balls but it was totally worth it. if i missed this evening i would be so upset and pissed.
the germans were coming in for a semester from the Alliance school but they we're totally accepting. on their own they are interested, but in a group they act like you're an outcast- the feeling was very odd.
