New Years in Punta Arenas 1/1/15
Andy woke me up at 7, so much for the sleeping in we were supposed to do. 3 eggs and about 6 hotdog/sausages later and we were set. We walked around town and checked out the ship junkyard and graffiti, so many colors faded and chipped over the years. I'll miss all the stray dogs. It's weird they all look so different and they are so friendly, if only I could take some of them home! Each one Andy pets wants to be his best friend for life. One dog kept jumping on Andy when we were walking away, I don't think they get much attention. We said ciao one last time to Andres and Monica and headed for our bus at 1. An uneventful ride back to PA, I slept most of the time.
There were two other couples I overheard staying at the same hostel so I asked if we could following them since I didn't know where it was exactly. We'll neither did they even w their map. We got to the Keoko hostel at 4:30. The one girl told us they were going to see the penguin colony and we could maybe go if they had room. Yes! We didn't have nothing else to do, everything is closed. A taxi came for them instead of a tour van because the agencies are closed. We decided to get in another taxi and spend the $100.
The colony was about a 30 min ride into the countryside. Our taxi driver filled up the car w natural gas. First time I've seen that. Andy mentioned we were sitting in a bomb.
We arrived to the gate around 6 and the dude said it was closed. But we came all this way! After tough negotiations w the taxi drivers, the dude let us in but we had to hurry. We walked across the wooden plank walkway for a 1/4 mile to the penguins on land near their homes that were holes in the ground. Some were making a weird call, others played w their mate. Then we walked down to the ocean and saw maybe a hundred or so. They were chillin on the he beach w their new children who haven't got their adult feathers yet. They were adorable and walked w a cute waddle. In the way out we stopped by a watchtower to see a few penguin families. The wind was ripping and we had to go.
Back to the hostel by 8. Good thing we had our camping dinners because everything was closed so we would have been SOL. Andy wasn't feeling well so I made the chicken and rice w asparagus soup. We packed since we had to get up early for our flight to Santiago. In bed by 10 w a pillow over my eyes since it was still daylight.
