Some people want to eat a vat of Crème Fraiche
A full nights sleep (even w the mauling from the mosquitoes)!! Up at 8 to prep for the grand breakfast. We really outdid ourselves at the grocery store. Breakfast consisted of soft boiled eggs, fresh bread and croissants from the bakery down the street, cheeses, meats, fruit, and a vat of “yogurt”. It was a debate what the vat actually was, everyone ate some except Andy, some people ate a lot. Andy said “it’s probably Crème Fraiche” to which I look at the container and alas, it is. Anthony ate half the vat, quite impressive, without getting sick. We’re gonna need some schnapps later to cure that.
We headed out for the day, right for wine tasting in Alsace France about 20 min away. We first hit up Bergheim France. It was a small town with a moat around it- quaint, picturesque. We admired the geraniums hanging from all the windows. This was not a big tourist town so we had a hard time finding places to wine taste. It had been several hours since breakfast so time for everyone to eat some tarte blamè! We stopped in a lovely outdoor restaurant under the grapes vines. I’m not sure if we were getting ignored because we didn’t speak French or that’s how things work around here (probably a little if both). The tarte flambè was delish (more Crème Fraiche) and the Gewurztraminer was a bit sweet but not bad with the food. A couple of hours later we were ready for the next stop.
We were low on time so we went right to Riquewihr. We found the macaroons and macrons finally and stocked up. Hit up several wine shops. The tasting is free for buying. The wines were mostly white, unique, delicious, and cheap!!! The bottles we bought were ~$6 each!! What??? This place is amazing!! How can good food and wine be so cheap?? This is an adult wonderland.
We were full, content, and ready for the thermal bath. We drove back to Germany to go to the Keidelbad, a center of various pools with different temperatures, jets and waterfalls to ease sore muscles. We relaxed for hours, just what we needed after a long day wine tasting. I wish we could have a place like this back home.
We were somehow getting hungry at 7 so we headed back to Marckolsheim for a homemade dinner. The boys cooked while the ladies sat on the balcony in the back enjoying the cooler weather. Andy made chicken with potatoes, white asparagus, and hollandaise sauce. We had salad and the charcuterie platter. We didn’t forget the schnapps of course. The only way to digest this late.
I checked in around 10:30. To my dismay, I saw the checkin time was for 10am, not pm. I fucking did it again. I reported the bad news to everyone. Christine and I started packing. We will need to leave by 5:30 to drive to Zurich and drop off the car. Dammit. I was really looking forward to one last day strolling around. Oh well, at least we didn’t miss our flight!!!
