Comida twilight zone 12/30
Got up kinda early to the airport by 900 after a good breakfast of eggs toast and strawberry juice. We didn't sleep much, the fucking kids were loud, that's the only problem with Cartagena, it's a big part of town. We easley got to the airport for our 1.5 hr flight to San Andrés. We were the only foreigners on the plane. Wonder why?
When we landed, Andy was all about taking a bus to our hotel. I'm all for taking the bus, but if I don't know anything about how that works and can't communicate with anybody, I'm all for taking a taxi and figuring out the bus situation later. Where are all these English speakers? We walked around for a bit and figured it out and jumped on the bus for less than a dollar each. People were yelling out a bunch of words when they wanted the bus to stop. I knew "Pare" was stop, but there was much more to it. We yelled out a bunch of words and it worked because the bus stop right in front of our hotel, the Iguana Gorda. It's a pretty nice hotel that has its own pool and just in front is the road and then the ocean. Unfortunately there's no beach and there's no way we can get in the water because it's all volcano rock that the waves are crashing onto.
We drank some beer, relaxed in the pool, and hung out for the afternoon. The woman working at the hotel speaks zero English so I have quite the time trying to figure things out. She makes us a delicious meal of fried fish with plantains. It was delicious and even though we can't understand each other, she's super friendly.
Time to go into town for a bit and check things out. We go into the town of San Andrés and walk around. It's definitely Colombia. It's a lot of the same stores that have perfume and weird things, definitely not American touristy.
The beach is nice but it's full of people. We walk along the streets and try to find a place to have a drink. Apparently we're walking in the wrong area because we can't find anything. Even the hotel would not serve us because we weren't staying there. We ended up going to the restaurant recommended on lonely planet. It was a little outside shack where we got some churrasco and liquados. Andy is having a hard time w the take-your-time waitress. It's island time baby.
We were tired so we called it a night and headed home. We went to the same bus stop as where we pick it up that morning then Andy saw another bus going in a different direction and decided to hop on. It ended up going through the middle of the island but luckily went by the West Coast and drop us off in front of our hotel. We watched a movie in Spanish and fell asleep in our private room.
